Project Understanding Detroit

Applications are now live for Project Understanding 2023, which will take place on Sunday, October 22. The program brings together a group of young Black and/or Jewish leaders for an immersive day of learning and discussion, including a dynamite Black/Jewish Detroit bus tour featuring superstar historian Jamon Jordan.

Black and/or Jewish (Metro-) Detroiters between the ages of 25-39, are eligible to apply.

Project Understanding 2022:
We hosted our inaugural Project Understanding Detroit in May 2022. The day began with a powerful bus tour of Detroit exploring overlapping histories between Black and Jewish communities, led by Jamon Jordan (Black Scroll Network, Official Historian for City of Detroit) and Jeannie Weiner (Jewish Historical Society of Michigan), and which featured a first-hand account of the 1967 Rebellion by poet Marsha Music. We then brought the group to Bea’s Detroit in Eastern Market for an afternoon of fellowship, panel discussion, and group dialogue.

This program would not have happened without our all-star steering committee and the generous support of AJC ACCESS, The Coalition for Black & Jewish Unity, and JCRC / AJC.
